Young Carers

One in 12 secondary students are Young Carers

Young Carers regularly help to look after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill, disabled or misuses drugs or alcohol.

They have extra things to do at home and might help by:

  • Sorting out medication.
  • Looking after brothers or sisters.
  • Supporting someone physically, like helping them out of bed.
  • Supporting someone emotionally, like listening to someone who is upset.
  • Helping someone to communicate.

At Alec Hunter Academy we’re listening to Young Carers. We want to ensure that all students are offered full access to all the school provides and are given every opportunity to succeed. We understand the impact being a Young Carer can potentially have on a young person’s education and wider life. To that end we look to support Young Carers by:

  • Making staff aware of students’ specific needs, for instance, needing additional time or support in order to complete homework
  • Offering the opportunity to attend homework club – a space where they work quietly and seek support if required.
