Results Day 2017

Staff and students at Alec Hunter Academy are celebrating after the school secured another set of excellent GCSE results, continuing the trend of improvement from recent years. The 2017 summer exam season saw students sitting the new Grade 9-1 GCSEs for the first time in Maths and English, with 64% gaining a grade 4 or better in both subjects, whilst 38% achieved a grade 5 or better in both. It is the first time in the school’s history that both core subjects (English and Maths) have achieved ‘good pass’ rates above 70% and, in addition, ...

...60% of students gained an A*-C grade in 2 or more Science subjects, a new high for the school.

The new 9-1 numerical grades do not map across in a simple way to the more familiar A*-G grades, so it is difficult to make any meaningful comparison of this year’s GCSE Maths and English scores with previous years, but these outcomes exceeded expectations for many young people and will now permit them to further their studies at college or sixth form.

Headteacher Trevor Lawn said “Teachers and support staff worked incredibly hard to prepare students for these new examinations, with different content and exam paper styles. We were desperately keen to see our young people succeed amid all this uncertainty and they really have excelled themselves. They were a lovely year group who worked exceptionally hard and we are very proud of their results across all subjects, as they should be too. I should also like to pay tribute to their parents, who fully supported our strategies and worked in partnership with us throughout. It is a real pleasure to see the school continue to forge ahead on its journey of sustained improvement in standards, as evidenced by these outcomes.”

Numerous students gained outstanding individual results, most notably Matthew Stone, who bagged a staggering 3 Grade 9s, 6 A*s and 1 A, whilst Iona Ridley and Alexandra Calugar led the girls, each gaining a hugely impressive 3 A* grades and 7 other subjects at Grade A, 7 or 8.
